The House of Jeroboam

In 1 Kings 11 the prophet Ahijah forells the dividing of the Kingdom of Israel and God speaks promising that Jeroboam the son of Nebat will be given the ten tribes of Israel. What a sad and interesting story this is. The Bible says "the man Jeroboam was a valiant warrior" (1 Kings 11:28). Then as God did with many others He declares his covenant with Jeroboam saying "If you listen to all I command you and walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight by observing My statutes and My commandments, as My son David did, then I will be with you and build you an enduring house as I build for David, and I will give Israel to you" (1 Kings 11:38). Think of the immense opportunity God is offering this man. I can't help but consider that God has given us, given me, this same promise. He has filled me with His Spirit and seated me with Jesus Christ in heavenly places. He has declared me to be his son and continually covers my life with his immense love and lavish grace.

Jeroboam had God's promise and had every opportunity to see a great house like David's rise up before the Lord. He even had a heart to see the people return to the Lord (1 Kings 12:27), but he compromised and leads Israel into idolatry making for them two golden calves. Its sad that subsequent kings over Israel followed in Jeroboam's wickedness and idolatry. 1 Kings 16:25-26 says Omri, king Ahab's father "acted more wickedly than all who were before him. For he walked in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat and in his sin which he made Israel sin." I don't want this said about my life. I pray God will raise up through me an enduring house and let it be said that my descendants listened to all God's commandments walked in His ways. Let them be valiant warriors who finish strong never departing from the presence of the Lord, never ceasing to follow Jesus Christ the One who has delivered us and redeemed us for His glory.
